Moratorio, Rodriguez Teodoro, Borrás & Asociados (JHI Uruguay)

By Juan José Moratorio, Partner
Being a very small country located between Argentina and Brazil, Uruguay has been constructing its competitive advantages as an open market economy for the last 40 years at least. Nowadays international trade figures show the growing importance of the external sector of the economy, and the country keeps working to construct this competitive advantage. Uruguay can now offer external investors the following.

  • Political stability

  • An excellent record of international payments

  • Free capital movements

  •  No restrictions for non-residents (external investors) to invest in whatever legal activity they chose, including the financial sector, acquisition of land, all agribusiness and industrial activities, etc.

  • Local and external investors are treated equally in terms of taxation.

  • Uruguayan Income Tax is charged only the profits earned inside the Uruguayan territory or related with Uruguayan products.

  • Free Trade Zones in which companies are not taxed. The law of creation of the Free Trade Zones clearly states that companies working inside them will not be charged by any existing or future tax.

  • The "Tax Reform" that took place as of July 1, didn't change the main features of Uruguayan taxation systems for international corporate investors.

Founded in 2001 as the merger of two traditional professional firms, Moratoria, Rodriguez Teodoro, Borrás (MRTB) & Asociados is currently run by its three original directors:  Juan José Moratorio, CPA, MBA; Dr. Javier Rodriguez Teodoro, Lawyer, Master's in Commercial Law, and Jorge Borrás, CPA, Master's in Commercial Law.

Our company grants all the services that local and external investors need to successfully run their businesses in Uruguay, including:

  • Legal and tax advisory;

  • Consultancy services (corporate structure, financing, international trade);

  • Audit;

  • Corporate finance advisory;

  • Outsourcing.

Our 30-person staff, located in MRTB´s Montevideo office, is made up of  well-known local professionals that actively participate in Uruguayan academic areas (CPA Association Audit Commission, Catholic University, Uruguayan Public University) and have all the necessary skills to successfully advise our customers in any local or regional matters.

JHI University Update
Don't miss Levels One, Two & Four in October:  Something for new & experienced auditors!

“It was great! I found the training very relevant to my daily work and I brought back several ideas that I could implement immediately. The training was more in-depth than any other training program I have attended, especially the information regarding risk assessment."

This is how Alison Edmands, Audit Supervisor, Kirkland Albrecht & Fredrickson, PC, described the Level Three session at JHI University in New York City earlier this month. She was one of  27 enthusiastic students from Region of Americas’ (RoA) firms who enhanced their auditing skills and expanded their network of colleagues from across North America at the first JHI University Level Three and Five sessions in New York City.

 “I am confident that this is only the beginning of great things to come for JHI University,” commented Ken Kirkland, Chair, RoA. “We will work to build on the success of the New York sessions, which, despite being scheduled a short time after tax season, attracted participation from a healthy cross-section of our U.S. and Canadian firms, as well as inquiries from as far away as Turkey.”

Ken thanked Mark Paneth & Shron LLP for generously providing the training location and CCH, a Wolters Kluwer business, for sponsoring Level Five.

Vista, Office 2007, telephony and more: Reserve Sept. 21-23 for IT Conference

Vista, Office 2007, telephony, data protection and secure client communications are among the topics on tap for the Information Technology Conference, scheduled this year from 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23 at The Westin O’Hare in Chicago.

The VISTA and Office 2007: A New Vista for the Enterprise session at 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 22 will be one highlight. Is Microsoft Vista ready for prime time? Find out during this key session.

Dan Harris

Barry MacQuarrie

The workhorse of the Enterprise, Windows XP Professional has officially reached its end-of-life and is no longer sold by Microsoft. But is Vista really ready to take XP’s place as a production platform? Delegates will examine the readiness of this new operating system to play with the big boys. The wait for that milestone of reliability – Service Pack 1 – is over and now it’s time to take a serious look at Vista. Kick the tires of this rebuilt and re-tooled Operating System, examine its new heightened security, including the User Access Control layer, and consider the advantages of its 64-bit operating system option.

Telephony
“Telephony”, with speaker Josh Robbins, Managing Partner, Geckotech, a leading Chicago hosted IP telephony provider, will be another not-to-be-missed conference event.
This session will explore the technologies available to maximize voice communication and make your people more efficient. It will cover the pitfalls of older pbx and key systems, considering and budgeting for replacement technology, the economics of Voice-over-IP technology, new features and capabilities your firm should not be without and more. Learn about a new option:  hosted telephony for your firm...making the equipment and its support someone else's problem.

See details about all the sessions in the Draft Program on both Jeffnet (General Discussion/Conferences) and the website.

Pre-Conference Fun
Dan and Liz Harris invite delegates and their spouses to a barbecue at their home in “Hoppin’ Wrigleyville”, Chicago’s hottest area, from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sept. 20, followed by Chicago-style blues entertainment. If you plan to attend the BBQ or optional tour of the en-terpret.co Data Center on Sept. 21, please indicate this on the Conference Registration Form.

A lesson learned
On the fence about attending the conference? Consider the story of London, England firm Jeffreys Henry LLP. A consistent participant through most of the IT conference’s 12-year history, Partner
Mark Tenzer and his team were unable to attend in 2007. So, they missed the thorough discussion about problems with Windows Vista and Office 2007 and the resulting recommendations to hold off on installing these programs until at least this coming summer. “We definitely could have saved ourselves some aggravation and money if we’d had someone at last year’s IT conference to explore these problems with other participants,” said Mark, Vice Chairman, JHI International Executive Committee.

Register now
Use the forms on Jeffnet and the website  to reserve your place at the conference and hotel. Accommodation can also be booked at the Westin O’Hare online at:

Travel the world with JHI

By Barry Seidel
Partner, Marks Paneth & Shron LLP

I never imagined that joining JHI would allow me to expand my favorite pastime...TRAVEL.

When my previous accounting firm merged to become Marks Paneth & Shron LLP, we automatically became part of JHI. With my expertise in expatriate tax issues, I became part of the regular delegation attending regional and international meetings. From the further reaches of Asia (Nagoya, Japan) to local venues such as Washington, DC, San Francisco and Boston, my travels for JHI have been far and wide.

I may perhaps be the only JHI delegate to have spent time in two different hospitals while attending an Annual General Meeting (AGM). It was an adventure to be admitted to Banff General Hospital, where they have little experience in cardiac matters, followed by a 100-mile ride in an ambulance to Calgary Foothills Hospital. The entire experience was hair-raising, especially for my wife, Linda, who "came along for the ride.” I will never forget the dedication and love shown by the JHI staff in handling the situation. That is just one of many reasons I will miss (former Executive Director) Marie Bordeleau, who has now moved on to a new career.

Closer to home, we have enjoyed the sights and sounds of Boston and the mellow weather of San Diego. Who could forget the international flair of Buenos Aires, Argentina, the cosmopolitan beauty of Mexico City or the tropical paradise of San Juan, Puerto Rico? Several of these JHI meetings allowed Linda and I the opportunity to add on a few days and explore other cities and countries. In Japan, we linked the Nagoya conference with Tokyo and Kyoto and our South American trip allowed us to visit Iguassu Falls and Rio de Janeiro.  While in Mexico, our gracious host, Roberto Resa (Resa y Asociados, S.C.), showed us the many sides of Mexican culture and cuisine that few tourists get to see.

Consummate host
Whether it was the San Diego Zoo or Boston Common, the cable cars of San Francisco or the artist colony in Sausalito, JHI has been the consummate host. The meetings have always been filled with great technical information, vibrant speakers, great networking opportunities and camaraderie. I take personal pride in my accomplishments in the area of education and with bringing JHI to become a significant vendor of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) for the members. I am grateful to my colleague, Wally Lindsay
(Dorfman Abrams Music, LLC) for his participation in our education initiative and "carrying the baton" into the forthcoming years. My three years on the Executive Board of the Region, have given me insight into the profession from the deepest parts of South America to our northern neighbor, Canada.

It saddens me that as my career will take me to retirement at the end of 2008; I will no longer be travelling for JHI.  My travelling, however, will not cease, as it is my passion. By the time you read this article, I will have completed my latest trip to the Ukraine, Russia, Lithuania, Latvia, Belarus and Kaliningrad. (That brings my total country count to 124.). I can only urge my colleagues to get involved with JHI and travel the world!
