Important Membership Information

The Importance of JHI Annual Membership Dues and Membership Survey Submissions
Reminders to those who have not yet submitted in their 2011 Annual JHI Membership Dues payment and/or 2010 Annual Membership Survey; please note these are important requirements to support valuable JHI programmes!

As you may know, the invoicing process has changed to make it easier and quicker to pay your 2011 Annual Membership Dues online through the secure and exclusive JHI Members Only section of www.jhi.com. For your convenience, JHI Headquarters has also sent a dues invoice via post. If you prefer, you may send this invoice to Headquarters with your payment. (Note: Only one dues invoice was sent to the primary contact but a copy may be requested from JHI Headquarters.)

Also, the annual JHI Membership Survey helps to accurately calculate a member firm’s Annual Membership Dues. The collective survey results are used to strengthen JHI’s branding in the international accounting industry and relevant trade media as JHI Headquarters submits them for professional rankings at the national, regional and international levels. The information is also used to compile collective statistics for the association’s marketing. Information collected is kept in strict confidence at JHI Headquarters and will not be individually shown, presented, traded or shared with external parties.

If you have any questions about submitting your dues payment and/or survey, please contact JHI Headquarters by e-mail or phone at +1 609-297-2234.

2011 JHI Conference Credits Usage
Starting in 2011, as a part of your membership benefits, each JHI member firm received a certain amount of Conference Credits to be used towards their International Conference & AGM and/or Region Conferences & AGMs payments for attending delegates and/or guests. This excludes educational events such as the Tax & Audit Conference, the Leadership Forum and the Information Technology Conference.

Conference Credits become available to each member firm as soon as their dues payment has been remitted. The amount of credits each firm receives is directly related to the Membership Dues Structure. To find out how many Conference Credits your firm has for 2011, please find your firm’s Membership Dues Level in the table below and match it to the corresponding amount of Conference Credits.

Conference Credits

When registering for a JHI conference online, please enter the discount code associated with the percentage of credits you wish to use per person, apply the credit in the appropriate field and complete your registration.

Discount codes can be found on the JHI Members Only section of www.jhi.com under JHI Conference and Events by selecting the conference you wish to attend and clicking on the registration link. When registering via fax or e-mail, please enter the discount code and the amount of Conference Credits to be used in the appropriate boxes as listed on the registration form. Once the total amount of Conference Credits for the year has been used, please remit the difference through other means of payment such as check, wire transfer or credit card.

If you have any questions about your Conference Credits, please contact JHI Headquarters by e-mail or phone at +1 609-297-2234.

    HEADQUARTERS UPDATE

A Message from Meghan Higgins, JHI Public Relations and Sponsorship Representative

As some of you may know, I work with JHI to help increase awareness for the organisation in a variety of ways—public relations, advertising sales and sponsorship outreach.

JHI’s 2011 sponsorship opportunities give participants the ability to place their company, products and services in front of a global audience of top professionals in the accounting industry.

Sponsors provide value to JHI members through the variety of products and services they offer while enabling JHI to provide additional value to its members in the form of new member benefits, programmes and educational opportunities.

As we continue to make connections and secure sponsors for the remainder of 2011, let us know if you conduct business with a company that would be a great fit as a JHI sponsor. If so, send them the JHI 2011 Sponsorship Kit and direct them to me for any questions or further information.

NEW PARTNER SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP (SIG)

The JHI Executive Committee Has Formed a “New Partner” Group

The purpose of this Special Interest Group (SIG) is to firstly provide a forum for new partners where they can share ideas, issues and information that is important and relevant to members who have either recently become a partner or to those who are looking to become a partner in the near future. The second focus is to encourage “the next generation” of partners to become active members of JHI.

The idea of the New Partner SIG has grown from a forum created among the Australian and New Zealand JHI members. There were seven JHI member firms in this region which had taken on new partners in their firms. Some of these new partners attended the Asia-Pacific Region Conference in Singapore and soon realised there were a lot of issues and questions they shared in common—many of these issues they were not comfortable raising to their fellow senior partners.

It was also a common theme that the senior partners in their firms had often moved on from these issues and generally had “more important issues” with which to attend. Out of this conference, the New Partner SIG was formed; they now meet three to four times yearly. As a result, the members of this group have developed strong professional relationships with each other and work together to assist each other in their development as a business partner and that of their individual practices.

By example, some issues on previous agenda’s for this group included:
  • Transition in work performed from technical to advisory/leadership role
  • HR issues in becoming a new partner, i.e. acceptance from other staff, dealing with senior partners
  • Staff issues within the firm itself (ensuring right staff levels to work required)
  • Dealing with difficult team members/clients/partners
  • How to make changes in the firm when you’re the newest partner
  • How to respond when the older heads are advising different direction
  • Networking – what does and does not work
  • Building a client base
  • Ownership/practice structures
  • Partner insurances/buy sell agreements

Another very valuable initiative of this new partner group was to invite a senior partner from one of the member firms as a guest mentor for part of their workshops. We all have “Graduate Induction” or “New Employee Induction” programmes, but how many of us have a “New Partner Induction” programme? Through JHI, we have an opportunity to help our members and their new partners with this often difficult transition.

The SIG is looking to promote and advertise this new concept to the JHI member firms. We anticipate there will be the opportunity at a future conference for time allocation to the New Partner SIG. Member firms will be encouraged to send along their younger/newer partners with the senior partner to a region conference or special event; a part of the programme will be set aside to focus on this group of members. This will also provide an opportunity to arrange talks/workshops by experts in the areas of organisation dynamics, etc.

To join the New Partner SIG, please e-mail Andrew Freeman of knp Solutions.

    NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES

Investment and Connections: JHI 2011 Europe/Middle East/Africa Region Conference & AGM Recap

JHI held the annual Europe/Middle East/Africa Region Conference & AGM in Istanbul, Turkey from 19-21 May 2011 at the Sheraton Istanbul Ataköy Hotel. Members gained insights on regional taxation treatments and Turkish investment opportunities through various learning sessions and speeches. Business training and networking specialist, Mark Perl of Kintish, gave an eye-opening presentation on using social networking to expand their businesses and gain international clients. The presentation covered social networking sites such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and blogs.

“The best part was Mark Perl’s presentation on the use of LinkedIn—superb,” said Dunstan Magro of W&D.

“From my view, one of most interesting parts was the panel with business men from three sectors. It’s a good way to know an update about the situation of most relevant sectors in the local economy. Also, the role play about comparative tax was really a brilliant initiative led by Tony,” said Emili Batlle of AddVANTE.

With ample opportunity for networking, attendees were also delighted by the rich cultural aspects of the location. JHI members explored Istanbul, one of the world’s oldest cities, taking in picturesque views of the Marmara Sea and learning about traditional Turkish architecture.
